Three Bustamanté Moons

Three Bustamanté Moons

Recently I was in Tlaquepaque, a lovely city outside Guadalajara, Mexico, filled with beautiful art, vibrant colors, fabulous food, and friendly, gracious people. Walking on one of the side streets, I happened upon the gallery of Sergio Bustamanté, a world-famous Mexican artist and sculptor who is known for the magical qualities of his art. Bustamanté is especially famous for his suns and moons. In an interview reported on Bustamanté’s website, he says this about the moons he creates: Mexico is a country of vivid lights, blazing sunsets, passionate colors, with numerous suns and starry nights enriched by the moon….My moons have had many lives, have reincarnated in different materials, embodied as singers, acrobats, wives and mothers of many children, but, above all, as women, women in love. I have painted them in acrylics, oils and have sketched them a thousand times. They are so familiar that they are part of my dreams and my life. I never grow weary and always recreate them, thus at the same time I recreate myself.

When I came upon these three moons in Bustamanté’s gallery, I actually laughed out loud. How can a person not be happy, looking at these faces?
