Two Dutch Dogs

Two Dutch Dogs

I was in The Hague in the Netherlands. It was a windy, cold January day. Snow was already covering the ground, and thick flakes were still falling. In spite of the weather, I was intent on exploring the city. I happened upon a public square where a loud, energetic citizen protest was occurring. It seems that rents were increasing at a pace many felt was unfair, so hundreds of men and women were in the public square to protest against the proposed rent rates. Speakers climbed to a wooden stage to give their opinions. Musicians played. People roamed around with placards. For us newcomers in the crowd, there was always someone nearby who was happy to explain what was going on, even for me who spoke no Dutch. As I moved around the square, thoroughly enjoying this experience of “real life” in a foreign city, I spotted these two magnificent dogs. Their owner had positioned himself where he could be part of the demonstration as well as look after his dogs. I watched him put food in their pans, and then I watched as the two dogs moved to the food in unison, assume almost identical postures, and begin to eat. I love dogs anyway; but this was a very special experience of beauty and awe for me: the sleek, elegantly proportioned dogs. The similarity of their stances. The way they ate in unison. I later wrote an entry for my website about this experience, which, if you are interested, can be found by clicking here for the blog: ‘Know Thyself’ Socrates Told Us—But How?.
